intervening variable

a VARIABLE which mediates the effect of an INDEPENDENT VARIABLE on a DEPENDENT VARIABLE. This may be an internal mechanism whose existence is hypothesized from the effects it is observed to have (e.g. the effect of the organism which intervenes between the S [stimulus] and R [response] in behaviouristic psychology), or another external explanatory variable (e.g. social class has an observed effect on morbidity but this is mediated by income, diet, housing, etc.).
