Jules Destrée
Destrée, Jules
Born Aug. 21, 1863, in Marcinelle; died Dec. 3, 1936, in Brussels. Belgian political figure and statesman.
In the early 1890’s, Destrée joined the socialist movement, becoming a member of the Belgian Labor Party. In 1894 he became a deputy to parliament. During World War I (1914–18) he held social-chauvinist views. He was hostile to the Great October Socialist Revolution in Russia. From December 1919 to November 1920 he was Belgian minister of science and culture. In the 1920’s he frequently represented Belgium on various League of Nations commissions concerning cultural questions.
