Web: www.jemezmountaintrail.org Description:Byway offers opportunities to view ancient Indian ruins, an Indian Pueblo, as well as spectacular geological formations. Areas of interest include Bandelier National Monument, Jemez State Monument, Valles Caldera National Preserve, SodaDam, Pueblo of Jemez, Cabezon, Battleship Rock and the Spence Hot Springs. Approximately 65 miles of the byway winds through the Santa Fe NationalForest, including 40 miles through the Jemez National Recreation Area, offering visitors opportunities for recreational activities.
Legth: 163 miles. Start/Endpoint: From Los Alamos, byway follows NM 4 west to La Cueva and then south to San Ysidro. From there it follows US 550 (the old NM 44) north to Cuba, then NM 126 to La Cueva, completing the loop, and then NM 4 back to Los Alamos. Time to Allow: 3 hours. Designation/Year: National Scenic Byway (1998).
