Jelali

(Turkish, singular celall), participants in revolts in the Ottoman Empire (mainly in Anatolia) in the 16th and 17th centuries. They are named for Celali, the leader of the revolt in 1519 in Tokat. Most of the Jelali were peasants acting against feudal exploitation. Small feudal lords and feudal militia also participated; they rebelled against the power of the sultans and fought for lost holdings and money. One of the largest Jelali revolts occurred in 1595-1603.
