Iraj-Mirza

(title, Jalal al-Mamalik). Born October 1874 in Tabriz; died March 1926 in Tehran. Persian poet.

Iraj-Mirza was the son of an impoverished Qajar prince. In his poetry democratic and anti-imperialistic ideas find expression (“Worker and Master”). He ridiculed the hypocrisy of the clergy (“Tears of the Sheikh”) and battled against religious fanaticism. He also wrote about the servile position of women (“Yashmak” and “The Book About the Yashmak,” a fragment of the satirical poem Arif-name). Iraj-Mirza’s best lyric poems are “Mother” and “A Mother’s Heart.”
