a river in Mogilev Oblast of the Byelorussian SSR, Smolensk and Briansk oblasts of the RSFSR, and Gomel’ Oblast of the Byelorussian SSR. It is a left tributary of the Sozh River (emptying into it near the city of Gomel’). Length, 437 km. Basin area, 10,900 sq km. The banks of the river are mostly low-lying, and it is fed mainly by snow. The average annual discharge at the village of Novye Bobovichi (109 km from the mouth of the river) is 83.4 cu m per sec. The river freezes over toward the end of November, and the ice breaks up late in March or early in April. Its chief tributaries are the Voronitsa and Unecha on the left. It is navigable in its lower course and is used for floating timber. The cities of Surazh and Dobrush are on the Iput’.
