Location:717 nautical miles west-southwest of Honolulu.
Special Features:In an area with hundreds of thousands of square miles of open ocean, Johnston Atoll is the only shallow water and dry land, offering an oasis for reef and bird life. There are 33 known species of coral here.
Habitats: Approximately 696 acres of land, on four coral islands and a 9-mile long emergent reef.
Access: Closed to public access.
Wild life: 14 species of seabirds including shearwaters, petrels, tropicbirds, frigatebirds, boobies, tern, and noddies; also three species of marine animals: green sea turtle, Hawaiian monk seal, and humpback whale.
