Interrow Crops

plants grown in the interrow spaces of young fruit orchards before the trees begin bearing fruit. Cultivation of this type makes use of the area not occupied by fruit trees and berry-producing plants. Plants that promote high soil fertility are used as interrow crops; these include row crops (vegetables and potatoes), annual legumes (vetch, peas, and soybeans), and perennial legumes (clover and alfalfa). Grain crops, such as rye, oats, and wheat, and high-stalk row plants are not recommended as interrow crops because they deplete the soil substantially and compete with the fruit crops for moisture and nutrients.
