jejunal biopsy

jejunal biopsy

Taking a small sample of the lining of part of the small intestine for microscopic examination. This is an important investigation in cases of MALABSORPTION. The biopsy is obtained by means of a small, spring-loaded device called a Crosby capsule that is swallowed suspended from a string and triggered when in place. In some forms of malabsorption there is a characteristic atrophy or absence of the small finger-like processes (villi) through which absorption occurs.
