释义 | Jeffries, James J.Jeffries, James J.,1875–1953, American boxer, b. Carroll, Fairfield co., Ohio. He began boxing in 1896, and in 1899 he won the heavyweight championship from Robert Fitzsimmons at Coney Island in New York City. He retired undefeated in 1905, but returned to the ring in 1910, when he was defeated by Jack Johnson at Reno, Nev.Jeffries, James J. (Jackson)(1875–1953) boxer; born in Carroll, Ohio. After winning the heavyweight championship in 1899 (in only his 13th professional fight) with a knockout of Bob Fitzsimmons, he defended his title seven times before retiring undefeated in 1905. In 1910 he lost in a comeback bid as the "great white hope" against Jack Johnson, who knocked him out in the fifteenth round. Jeffries's career record was 20 victories, one loss, and two draws. On retiring he promoted amateur boxing. |
