Kalemie (kälā`mē), formerly Albertville (älbĕrvēl`), city (1984 pop. 73,528), Tanganyika prov., SE Congo (Kinshasa), on Lake Tanganyika at the mouth of the Lukuga River. It is a commercial center and a rail-steamer transfer point, handling goods moving between the Congo and Tanzania. Manufactures include textiles and cement. The city was founded in 1892 by Belgians as a military post in their campaign against Arab traders. |
