Ketchall, Ephraim

(1788–1877) social scientist, geographer; born in Old Mystic, Conn. He made numerous explorations in the Mississippi Valley and Mexico, where he measured the size of pyramids and buildings. By using his figures as a measure of the advancement of nations, he had anticipated later archaeologists' ideas about the size of cities as a measure of their significance.
