Jovanović, Slobodan

 

Born Nov. 21, 1869, in Novi Sad; died Dec. 12, 1958, in London. Serbian and Yugoslav historian, statesman, and ideologist of the Great Serbian bourgeoisie.

Jovanović took his degree in law in Geneva in 1890. From 1897 to 1941 he was a professor at the Great School in Belgrade (the school became the University of Belgrade in 1905). From Mar. 27 through Apr. 6, 1941, he served as deputy prime minister in the government of D. Simović. From January 1942 through June 1943, Jovanović headed the royal government-in-exile in London. In May 1946 he became chairman of a reactionary organization of Yugoslav émigrés, the Yugoslav National Committee. Jovanović is the author of a series of works on the history of Serbia from 1838 through 1903.
