(IDU) (in-jek'shŭn drŭg yū'zĕr) A person who uses a hypodermic to administer drugs, usually illegally (e.g., heroin, methamphetamines); often leads to dermatologic and hematologic disorders resulting from unclean site or equipment; widely associated with transmission of HIV; also called injecting drug user.

injection drug user

A person who gives himself or herself drugs parenterally, usually to attain a euphoric or altered state of consciousness. The practice is rarely performed aseptically and may result in the spreading of communicable disease or self-injury. See: illustration
