inpatient admission

A term which, as defined in the UK, is an emergent, urgent or routine admission to hospital which marks the beginning of an inpatient episode, and entails a full admission procedure with completion of registration documents and formal acceptance of the patient by the hospital, the specialty and consultant for inpatient care. Inpatients may be admitted from outside the NHS, from another NHS inpatient service or day-case service, or as outpatients.
