International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry IUPAC

an organization whose aims are to maintain contact between the chemistry research centers of various countries, to coordinate research in chemistry and the publication of scientific papers, and regulate and standardize chemical terminology. In particular, IUPAC publishes the International Tables of the Atomic Weights of the Elements.

IUPAC was founded in 1920. Its membership comprises (1973) scientific institutions from 45 countries, including the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (since 1930). National committees of chemists have been organized in a number of the member-countries. The chairman of the National Committee of Soviet Chemists is Academician N. M. Emmanuel’ (since 1972).

IUPAC, which publishes the journal Pure and Applied Chemistry, is a member of the International Council of Scientific Unions.
