International Literacy Day

Literacy Day, International

September 8Established by the United Nations to encourage universal literacy, this day has been observed since 1966 by all countries and organizations that are part of the United Nations system. It was a direct outgrowth of the World Conference of Ministers of Education in Tehran, Iran, which first called for the eradication of illiteracy throughout the world. Observances are sponsored primarily by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) and include the awarding of special literacy prizes.
Prizes are also awarded by the International Reading Association and the Japanese publisher Shoichi Noma to literacy programs that have made a significant difference. For example, in 1984 the Noma Prize was given to the Bazhong District in the People's Republic of China, where the literacy rate had been raised from 10 percent to 90 percent over a 35-year period.
