instrumental rationality the subjection of activity to the criterion of effectiveness alone’ (GELLNER, 1988). This form of rationality is often regarded as the essence of the process of RATIONALIZATION underlying the transformation of premodern, PREINDUSTRIAL SOCIETIES to modern INDUSTRIAL SOCIETIES.
