information governance

A term used in the NHS for the principles, processes, legal and ethical responsibilities for managing and handling information. Information governance (IG) sets the requirements and standards that the NHS must achieve to ensure it fulfills its obligations to handle the information securely, efficiently and effectively. The National Information Governance Board for Health and Social Care (NIGB) regards IG as essential for using patient information both to benefit the individual to whom the information relates and for the public good.
