Hayden, Ferdinand V. Hayden, Ferdinand V. (Vandiveer)(1829–87) geologist; born in Westfield, Mass. After working on surveys in the northwest U.S.A. (1853–62), he became professor of geology at the University of Pennsylvania (1865–72). He was director (1867–79), then geologist (1879–86), of the U.S. Geological Survey. He was influential in securing the establishment of Yellowstone Park. |
