Hayashi, Senjuro,

1876–1943, Japanese army officer and political leader, b. Kanazawa, Ishikawa prefecture. After graduating from the Imperial Japanese Army Academy (1897) and the Army War College (1903), he took part in the attack on Port Arthur during the Russo Japanese warRusso-Japanese War,

 and held various positions at the army academy. Hayashi was the Japanese army representative to the League of Nations (1923–24), commander in chief of the Chosen Army in Korea (1930–32), a member of the Supreme War Council (1932–34, 1935–36), and army minister (1934–35). After a brief term (Feb.–June, 1937) as prime minister, Hayashi served (1940–41) on the privy council of Japan.
