Acute inflammation of the trachea, which is most often caused by Staphylococcus aureus. It typically follows a recent viral infection and primarily affects young children, whose narrower bore tracheas are at increased risk of closure by mucosal oedema.Clinical findings Croup-like cough, dyspnoea, high fever.
Exam Intercostal retraction, stridor.
Imaging Thumb and little finger sign.
Lab ABGs, culture (nasopharynx, trachea).
Management Intubation, O2 therapy, antibiotics.
