Established: Established as part of Hawaii National Park on August 1, 1916; redesignated Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on September 22, 1961. Wilderness designated on November 10, 1978. Designated a Biosphere Reserve in 1980 and a World Heritage Site in 1987.
Location:96 miles from Kailua-Kona driving southeast on Hwy. 11, or 125 miles through Waimea and Hilo via Hwys. 19 and 11. The park is 30 miles from Hilo.
Facilities:Campgrounds (é), picnic area, rest rooms (é), lodging, restaurant/snacks, visitor center (é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail. Entrance fee required.
Activities:Camping, hiking, mountain climbing, auto touring, stargazing, ranger-led programs.
Special Features:Active volcanism continues here, on the island of Hawaii, where at lower elevations luxuriant and often rare vegetation provides food and shelter for a variety of animals. An 11-mile drive circles Kilauea's summit caldera and craters, passes through rainforest and desert, and provides access to scenic stops.
