Chartered c.1795, Hammerfest was heavily damaged by British naval bombardment in 1809, by fire in 1890, and by retreating German forces in 1944.Hammerfesta city and port in the extreme north of Norway, in the county of Finnmark; situated on Lake Kvaløya. Population, 7,000 (1970). Located just under 70° 40’ N lat., Hammerfest is the northernmost city in Europe. It is a center of the fishing and fish-processing industries.
