Ilych
a river in Komi ASSR, right tributary of the Pechora River. Length, 411 km; basin area, 16,000 sq km. The river rises in the western spurs of the Northern Urals. In its upper course the Ilych has a shallow shoreline; in its middle course the river has cut deeply through a valley. The lower course lies in the Pechora lowland, which consists primarily of floodplains. The Ilych is fed by rain and snow. The average annual discharge is 177 cu m per sec at the settlement of Maksimovo, 47 km from the mouth of the river. The river freezes over in early November and thaws in late April. The largest tributaries are the Kogel’ on the right and the Pal’iu on the left. The river is navigable below Shantym. The Pechora-Ilych Preserve is located along its left bank.
