A trade center and stronghold since the 9th cent., Helsingborg passed from Denmark to Sweden in 1658 but was destroyed during the Danish-Swedish conflicts in the 17th cent. The city was rebuilt in 1710. Its modern industrial development dates from the mid-19th cent. Of note are a well-preserved castle (12th–15th cent.), the Church of St. Mary (13th–15th cent.), and numerous half-timber houses.Helsingborg(also Hälsingborg), a city in southern Sweden, in the Iän (county) of Malmöhus. Population, 102,100 (1975). A seaport located at the narrowest part of Øresund (The Sound), Helsingborg handled 6.7 million tons of freight in 1975. It is linked to the city of Helsingør in Denmark by railroad ferry and by ferries that transport motor vehicles.
