Hamburger, Viktor

(1900– ) embryologist; born in Landshut, Germany. He taught in Germany (1926–32), then received a fellowship to the University of Chicago (1932–35). He moved to Washington University, St. Louis (1935–66), remaining active after achieving emeritus status in 1969. His microneurosurgical transplant experiments on chick embryos demonstrated the intrinsic properties of nerve fibers and their modification by environmental manipulation.
