immersion objective[ə′mər·zhən əb‚jek·tiv] (optics) A high-power microscope objective designed to work with the space between the objective and the cover glass over the object filled with an oil whose index of refraction is nearly the same as that of the objective and the cover glass, in order to reduce reflection losses and increase the index of refraction of the object space.
