helioscope[′hē·lē·ə‚skōp] (optics) A telescope for observing the sun that protects the observer's eyes from the sun's glare. Helioscope an astronomical telescope adapted for visual observations of the surface of the sun. Dark filters, silvered objectives, and special helioscopic eyepieces are used to diminish the brightness of the solar disk, making it possible to decrease the amount of light striking the eye. At the present time helioscopes play a secondary role since research on the sun is done largely by photographic methods. |
