Hämeenlinna

(hă`mānlĭn'nä), Swed. Tavastehus, city (1998 pop. 45,555), capital of Southern Finland prov., S Finland. It is a lake port and a manufacturing town with plywood mills, tanneries, spool mills, and rubber works. Built around a 13th-century castle on Lake Vanajavesi, the city was chartered in 1638. The beautiful Aulanko-Karlberg natural park nearby is a tourist center. The composer Jean SibeliusSibelius, Jean Julius Christian

(Swedish, Tavastehus), a city in southern Finland, on Lake Vanaja. Capital of the lääni (province) of Häme. Population, 41,000 (1975). Industries include metallurgy, saw-milling, and the manufacture of motor vehicles, wood products, textiles, and candy. The Silver Line lake cruise begins at Hämeenlinna. Nearby is the Aulanko park. The city was the birthplace of the composer J. Sibelius and the folklorist E. Lönnrot.
