At the village of Ilovlia, 22 km from the mouth, the average water flow is 9.6 cu m per sec. The Ilovlia freezes in the beginning of December and thaws at the end of March or the beginning of April. In the summer the river is broken up into separate stretches. In the 16th and 18th centuries attempts were made to join the Ilovlia and Volga rivers by canal in the region of the city of Kamyshin. Since ancient times the area has been the site of a portage linking the Don basin with the Volga.
