Hale, Philip Leslie

Hale, Philip Leslie

(1865–1931) painter, critic; born in Boston, Mass. Going to Paris in 1887 and joining Monet's Impressionist circle at Giverny, he returned in 1890 as "the boldest of the American Impressionists." Despite his openness to new styles in his painting and writings, he never gained much acclaim and is best known for his critical study, Jan Vermeer of Delft (1913).
