idiochromatin
idiochromatin[¦id·ē·ō′krō·mə·tən] (cell and molecular biology) The portion of the nuclear chromatin thought to function as the physical carrier of genes. idiochromatin
idiochromatin An obsolete term for an extranuclear part of chromatin which earlier workers thought played a role in reproduction. Idiochromatin is one of many terms coined in the “light microscopy” era, during which analysis of cellular components was based strictly on morphology, a technique now regarded as primitive. Subsequent immune and molecular analysis of a previously described intracellular structure showed that earlier conclusions as to its nature or function were incorrect. |
