Location:12 miles northwest of Hilo, on the island of Hawaii.

Special Features:Refuge's two units are located at elevations between 2,000 and 6,600 feet on the east and west sides of the island of Hawaii. The sloping terrain is forested with some of the finest remaining stands of native montane rainforest in the state.
Habitats: 32,733 acres on the windward (eastern) slope of Moana Loa. Habitats include grassland and open woodland at the highest elevations; a closed-canopy rain forest with an understory of native trees, shrubs, and ferns around 5,000 feet; and bogs, fern patches, and scrub dissected by deep gulches below 4,000 feet.
Access: Open to the public on weekends and holidays.
Wild life: Endangered forest birds, including the akiapola'au, the Hawaii akepa, Hawaii creeper, i'iwi, apapane, elepaio, and Hawaiian hoary bat.
