Hájek Z Libocan, Vaclav

Hájek Z Libočan, Vaclav

Year of birth unknown; died 1553. Czech chronicler.

Hájek z Libočan is the author of the Czech Chronicle, which sets forth the history of Czechoslovakia from legendary times to the beginning of the 16th century. His work, written in opposition to the humanist Martin Kuthen’s chronicle, reflected the interests of the large feudal lords and of the Catholic clergy. Over the course of a period extending from the 16th through the 18th century the Czech Chronicle, which was distinguished by a masterful skill in exposition, was one of the few books available to Czech readers on the history of their native land.
