Area, 6,200 sq km. Population, 479,000 (1975). The capital of the department is Tours. Industry employs 22 percent of the economically active population, while agriculture employs 21 percent (1968). Industry is concentrated in Tours, mainly machine building, chemical production, printing, and food processing. Eyeglasses are manufactured in Amboise, and an atomic power plant is located in Chinon. Agriculture includes wine growing and vegetable and fruit cultivation. On the plateaus, wheat, forage crops, and potatoes are grown. Livestock is also raised.
