Gricius, Jonas Augustino

Born Aug. 5, 1928, in Kaunas. Soviet cinematographer. Honored Art Worker of the Lithuanian SSR (1965). Member of the CPSU since 1960.

In 1954, Gricius graduated from the camera department of the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography. Since 1957 he has been a cinematographer at the Lithuanian Film Studio. He shot the films The Turkeys (1962), the short story “The Last Shot” in the film Living Heroes (1960), Cannonade (1963), Steps in the Night (1963), The Last Day of Vacation (1965), and Staircase to Heaven (1967). His most important cinematographic works are No One Wanted to Die (1965), Hamlet (1964), and King Lear (1970); the last two were shot in the studio of Lenfilm. From 1963 to 1968 he was first secretary of the Lithuanian Union of Cinematographers. He won the State Prize of the Lithuanian SSR in 1960 and the State Prize of the USSR in 1967.
