Gremiashchii

 

a Soviet destroyer built in the 1930’s, which distinguished itself in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–45. Displacement, 1,860 tons; speed, 70.4 km/hr (38 knots); armament: four 130-mm guns, two 76-mm guns, four 37-mm guns, one 20-mm gun, eight machine guns, two triple-tube torpedo facilities, and 60 mines; crew, 210.

In 1939 the Gremiashchii was transferred from the Baltic Fleet to the Northern Fleet. During the Great Patriotic War it provided security for the sea lines of communications, led convoys of vessels, and supported ground forces with artillery fire. The seamen of the Gremiashchii shot down 14 and damaged more than 20 planes and sank an enemy submarine. On Mar. 1, 1943, it became a guards ship. After the war it went out of service. The name Gremiashchii has been conferred on a new Soviet missile ship.
