Gregory of Saint Vincent
Gregory of Saint Vincent
Born 1584 in Bruges; died Jan. 27, 1667. in Ghent. Belgian mathematician.
In his Opus geometricum (1647), Gregory of Saint Vincent was concerned with calculating the areas of curvilinear figures and the volumes of bodies. To that end taking the ancient Greek scholars as his guide, he inscribed into the former and latter enough parallelograms and parallelepipeds to “exhaust” (the term was first used by him) the area or volume. Gregory of Saint Vincent was a member of the Jesuit order.
