haemophagocytic syndrome haemophagocytic syndrome A disease in which the large scavenging cells, the MACROPHAGES or histiocytes, attack blood forming tissues in the bone marrow, causing severe anaemia and bleeding tendency. Some cases are due to infection with herpes viruses, such as the cytomegalovirus and the EPSTEIN-BARR VIRUS, and these tend to be very serious. |
