Beloretsk
(byĕlərĕtsk`), city (1989 pop. 72,000), in Bashkortostan, W Siberian Russia, in the Urals and on the Belaya River. One of the oldest industrial cities of the Urals region, Beloretsk is a metallurgical center, with industries that produce steel wire and cables. The city has medical and pedagological institutes. Beloretsk is one of the oldest mining settlements in the Southern Urals. It arose in 1762 along with the construction of a metallurgical plant, on the basis of which the M. I. Kalinin Beloretsk Metallurgical Combine was created. There is also a metal-working plant. The evening division of the Magnitogorsk Mining and Metallurgical Institute, a metallurgy technicum, a medical school, and a pedagogical school are located in Beloretsk.
