hybrid swarm
hybrid swarm[′hī·brəd ′swȯrm] (genetics) A collection of hybrids produced when there is a breakdown of isolating barriers between two species whose areas of distribution overlap. hybrid swarm
hybrid swarm a group of genetically variable organisms resulting from the hybridization of two previously distinct and separate populations. Subsequent crossing and backcrossing results in a very variable population as a result of segregation. Often the genetical variability appears as morphological variability, such as different colour forms. Where different colour forms of an animal occur in different parts of the range, the hybrid swarm is characterized by the presence of all or a wide range of these forms. |
