Any of a number of transcription factors (e.g., HIF-1alpha) which activate transcription of genes to produce proteins that increase oxygen delivery by stimulating erythropoiesis and angiogenesis, and triggering adaptation to low oxygen environment (e.g., by stimulating glycolysis or mediating apoptosis).
