hy·po·ton·ic la·bor (hī'pō-ton'ik lā'bŏr) The disordered process of giving birth in which contractions are less frequent than necessary for the delivery to continue normally. hypotonic laborA condition during the active phase of labor in which contractions are inadequate in frequency, intensity, and duration and are ineffective in causing cervical dilation, effacement, or fetal descent. Hypotonicity usually occurs after the woman has entered the active phase of labor and most often is related to uterine overdistention, fetal macrosomia, multiple pregnancy, or grand multiparity.
