Web: www.kingmantourism.org Description:Route 66 was designated in 1926 as a federal highwaylinking Chicago,IL to Los Angeles, CA. The 2,448-mile route passed through Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California. The road was decommissionedin 1985 in favor of the new interstate highway system and today only 1,410 miles of the original route in three states (Illinois, New Mexico and Arizona) have been designated as National Scenic Byway.Arizona'sHistoric Route 66includes the longest unbroken stretch of the original route and some ofthe most picturesque scenery in the Southwest. Areas along the way include the city of Flagstaff, Petrified Forest NationalPark, Meteor Crater, Sunset Crater Volcanic National Monument, WalnutCanyon National Monument, Grand Canyon Caverns, as well as Homolovi Indian ruins andcliffdwellings of the Sinagua Indians.
Legth: 370 miles (Arizona section); 1,410 miles (entire byway). Start/Endpoint: Runs east/west from Lupton on the New Mexico/Arizona border to Topock on the Arizona-California border. Time to Allow: 7 hours (Arizona section); 5-6 days (entire byway). Designation/Year: National Scenic Byway (2005).
