histologically benign

A term of art referring to a lesion that does not meet any criteria of malignancy—e.g., marked cellular atypia, increased mitoses, disruption of basement membranes, metastasis. Histologically benign lesions may nonetheless be clinically malignant (e.g., craniopharyngiomas), as they compromise closed spaces or compress nerves and/or blood vessels that are difficult to manage.
