Heymans, Corneille Heymans, Corneille (kôrnā`yə hī`mäns), 1892–1968, Belgian physiologist. His contributions to the physiology of circulation include a study of the sensory mechanism through which arterial blood pressure is maintained under a reflex mechanism. He discovered the importance of the carotid sinus in regulating the respiratory center; for this finding he received the 1938 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. He became professor at the Univ. of Ghent in 1930. |
