Hispania Citerior

a Roman province on the east coast of Spain.

The province was formed in 197 B.C. around its main city, New Carthage. Under Augustus, Hispania Citerior was renamed Hispania Tarraconensis in 27 B.C. with Tarraco as its chief city.
