Web: www.mnmississippiriver.com Description:The 2,069-mile Great River Road borders the Mississippi River through the states ofMississippi, Arkansas, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. TheMinnesota section passes along a number of towns and urban areas along the banks of the Mississippi River, as well as the pristine lakes and forests of northern Minnesota. Route includes Lake Itasca State Park, the headwaters of the Mississippi River and Minnesota's first state park, established in 1891 to conserve its giant pines fromlogging.
Legth: 575 miles (Minnesota section); 2,069 miles (entire byway). Start/Endpoint: Beginning at the "Old Man River" source at Lake Itasca, the Minnesota section of the byway runs east and then south, picking up segments of numerous state and county roads, and ending at the Minnesota-Iowa state line. Designation/Year: National Scenic Byway (2000).
