Houghton, Henry Oscar Houghton, Henry Oscar(1823–95) publisher; born in Sutton, Vt. In 1848 he launched Riverside Press printers and in 1864 started the distinguished publishing firm that evolved into Houghton, Mifflin; the company, a descendant of Ticknor & Fields, published such authors as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Robert Browning, and Charles Dickens. |
